In 2007 our founder was managing his rentals the old fashioned way using pen, paper, spreadsheets, and his memory of
who owes rent and which fridge needs replacing and which pipes were leaking. This worked great for the first few rentals, but quickly became a mess
of receipts, poor record keeping, a failure to know who's rent is late, and forgetting what maintenance needed to be done when and where. Sound familiar?
With a background in software development, he knew there had to be a landlord specific software solution which would tidy up his records and help him continue growing his rental empire. Alas -- after countless days of searching and reviewing software applications, none were up to the task. Accounting software like Quickbooks did not have features specific to landlords, and the software that would work was designed for huge corporations and was cost prohibitive.
So one very early morning in March of 2007, Rentec Direct started sprouting to life. One early morning after another (as Nathan also had a day job) he went to work creating a fully featured property management software application. About fourteen thousand gallons of coffee later, a free application was available to all landlords world-wide called Rentec Direct. (and it's still available today as Rentec Basic)
Rentec Pro, loaded with super cool features for landlords like online rental payments and tenant screening, was born a couple years later. Rentec Pro was so popular among landlords that we started getting heavy interest from property managers who wanted access to these same cool features that landlords had access to. We complied by adding Rentec PM which included nifty features like trust accounting to support the small-mid size property management community.
